A Book Recommendation

I recently finished an amazing book! Tolstoy and the Purple Chair by Nina Sankovitch. Recommended here on The Writing Life of Melanie Cole (great blog! make sure to check it out!!). It just sounded so good and intriguing I had to pick it up! And wow!

I breezed through this book in a two days! Which sounds impressive until I tell you that this lovely book is about a woman who reads a book a day for a year.  It is a personal memoir depicting Nina's struggle with losing her sister to cancer. She tries desperately to live enough for the both of them for three years and finally realizes that she can't keep this up. she can't keep running away from her grief and pain so she decides to heal herself with books.
She takes a year (no she's not working at the time) to sit down and read a book a day every day for a year. And it is beautiful. She talks about her reading but she talks more about what each book evokes in her. What memories are brought to the surface, what feelings they inspire, what she learns from each story and author.
It really is the perfect picture of how reading can help put us in a better place, give us perspective and make us feel less alone.
Have you read any good books lately?
